Donald Charles Austen Sr.
July 17, 1936 - November 10, 2022
We regret to announce the death of Donald Charles Austen, Sr. (Boynton Beach, FL), who passed away on November 10, 2022.
He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Lila Mollan Austen, and his sister Lila McKenna. He is survived by his devoted wife Mary Ellen (Volpe), son Donald, Jr. and granddaughter Maggie, son Clifford, daughter-in-law Cindy, grandsons Daniel and Michael, brother Alfred and his family, and nephews Phillip, Daniel, Michael, and Brian McKenna and their families, and brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Nancy Volpe and their family.
Donald will be remembered by friends and family for his devotion as a husband, quiet stubbornness, and patient craftsmanship. A graduate of Jamaica High School (Queens, NY), Donald then spent most of his career as a member of ALA 1 union (Amalgamated Lithographers Union: Local One-L). Donald spent over 50 years as an avid boater, fishermen, and hunter, using these past times to connect with his sons, nephews, and friends. Married for over 64 years, Donald traveled extensively with his wife, Mary Ellen, to Europe, Asia, and around the Americas. In his retirement, Donald moved from his home on Long Island, NY to sunny Florida where he co-founded the Hernando Lions Club in Citrus County. When he wasn’t tinkering with some chore in the house Donald could be found listening to Tennis matches, rescuing kittens from wild dogs, or cheering his grandchildren on at school events.
The family welcomes calls and cards, a private celebration of life will be held in Boynton Beach, FL on Wednesday, December 28th. In place of flowers the family asks that you donate to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation or your local Lions Club.
