Jean B Shirley

June 1, 1920 — January 29, 2016

Jean Barbara Shirley was born June 1, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY to Michael F. and Maude J (Muir) Nugent. She grew up in Upper Montclair, NJ. While on a trip to Bermuda she met William E. Shirley "Slim", whom she married 2 years later in 1942. She moved to Bermuda where she spent the war as Assistant to the Admiral in charge of the US Navy stationed at Somers Point.

After the war Jean and Slim moved to Philadelphia where Slim attended the University of Pennsylvania. The then moved to Riverton, NJ where she raised her family. She enjoyed playing bridge, and , she and Slim were avid golfers belonging to Riverton Country Club. To Slim's chagrin she had six holes in one before he had his first!. She was the secretary to US Senior Woman's Golf Association.

Slim and Jean retired to Boca West and spent over 30 years golfing and enjoying the Florida weather. After 60 years of marriage Slim died in 2002 and Jean moved to Abbey Delray and joined the Little Club in Gulfstream, FL. She enjoyed playing golf well until she was 93.

Jean is survived by her children: Barbara "Bobby" Bear (Mack Pexton) of Bozemont, Mt; Anthea "Tony" Shirley (Carl Griebel) of Claiborne, MD; and William E. "Bill" Shirley (Susan) of West Chester, PA; four grandchildren: Kaitlin Hesse-Bear (Zachary) of Denver, CO; Alec Bear of Brooklyn, NY; Christopher "Chris" Shirley of E. Nareton, PA; and Donielle Johnson of Dowingtown, PA; and four great-grandchildren: Juniper Hesse-Bear; Taylor, Troy and Tatum Johnson. She is also survived by several cousins in the Boca Raton area, and her best friend Iris Caplowe.

Private services will be held in Bermuda at a later date.
