Richard Arthur Downs passed away August 7, 2023 at the age of 82 due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease.
Born in Detroit, Michigan to his parents Glenn D. and Florence C. Downs, he was raised in Wyandotte and Highland Park by his loving grandparents, Archie and Florence Griffor. Archie introduced him to the sport of baseball and he fell in love. At Highland Park High School he lettered in both baseball and football, and made many lifelong friends and lasting memories. He went on to attend college at Eastern Michigan University where he joined Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He ventured into insurance sales with Bankers Life and Casualty owned by John D. MacArthur, and found a niche for himself. He and his family later moved to Boynton Beach, Florida where he continued in insurance sales and had a radio show on WPBR 1040 am entitled “Insurance Talk”. All these things he talked about in his final days.
Richard had many nicknames including being affectionately called “Dickey” by his grandparents when he was a child, “Downtown Downs” by his teammates when he played basketball, and “Richie” by most of his friends. Our father was unmistakably one of a kind, one who could never be duplicated, and one whose legacy will live on through generations. His booming voice, gregarious and outgoing personality, and his sensitive and burdened heart that he voraciously protected, will be internalized by all of us who knew him. His bigger than life personality, humorous stories and one-liners, his rhyming, rapping and singing, and his love for, and pride in his children and grandchildren will always be remembered.
Richard is survived by his 6 children, Angela (Jon Reeder), Melanie (Jeff Snyder), Tiffany (Chris Snow), Darin (Christy), Darrell (Julia) and Laura (Mike Nichols), and his 12 grandchildren, (Riley, Luke, Hope, Bryan, Cooper, Brady, Trevor, Briana, Braden, Jackson, Nathaniel and Addison).
